Description: The Bench is where all the game play decisions may be set. This includes the hire and fire of Trainers and Head Coaches. Please note that games are played unattended, therefore owners of teams do not make decisions as the games are being played. You must set up a generic "style" you wish your team to play in the Bench section, then, they execute that style.

Defense Style: The defense style is a generic style of play on the defensive end and may be set to one of three options, Aggressive, Normal and Passive. These styles impact on court performance and results.

Passive: A passive defense is one that does not cause a lot of turnovers and will allow some defensive rebounds, however, it will cause your starters to be less fatigued and also create less injuries on your team.  Pros: less fouls, less fatigued players, less injuries, good half court defense.  Cons: less defensive rebounds, less steals, force fewer turnovers, allow the opposing team to control the clock.
Normal: A normal defense is similar to a normal offense.  Your team will get its fair share of defensive rebounds, steals, etc.  Players will fatigue at a normal rate and they will get injured a normal amount of the time.  Pros: None  Cons: None.
Aggressive: An aggressive defense will foul players more often, however, it will also generate more steals and grab more defensive rebounds.  In addition, players are fatigued more and are subjected to greater chance of injury.  Pros: More steals, more rebounds, create more turnovers.  Cons: more fouls, more fatigue, more injuries.

Offense Style: Like the defense style, the offense style has three levels of play and dictates how your players play on the offensive end of the court.

Passive: A passive offense is one that does not play an up tempo style of game.  They will not shoot it out with opposing teams and will try to keep the score low.  These teams typically like to work in the half court set and don't concentrate efforts on fast breaks.  Pros: Players don't fatigue as quickly and therefore play more minutes, less injuries, not as many turnovers, less fouls, keep games closer by keeping score low.  Cons: Less offensive rebounding, lower shooting percentage, difficult to come from behind.
Normal: A normal offense is just that, not too flashy, not too boring.  This is a mix of a half court game and taking advantage of fast break opportunities when available.  Pros: Moderation, players don't fatigue fast, team plays a well rounded game.  Cons: Turn the ball over more than a passive offense, allow other team to control the ball for more time.
Aggressive: An aggressive offense is one that likes to run.  When the opportunity is there, they will always choose to push the ball up the court.  Players dive for loose balls, sail into the crowd, etc.  Pros: More points, higher shooting percentage, possibility for larger margins of victory, more offensive rebounds, Cons: Fatigue quickly, more turnovers, more injuries, more fouls, less ball control and clock management.

Offensive Sets: There are ten offensive sets in Franchise Basketball. Each of those sets has certain positive features (and often showcased positions), but also has drawbacks. For example, the spread offense is good versus some zone coverage's, but, doesn't give you good rebounding and also tends to take shots away from your center and power forward. You may select three formations, a primary, a secondary and a tertiary. You also select the frequency with which you want to play each of those sets, up to 70% of the time for your primary. Which sets you have available to you depends on your coach. Sets that are available to everyone are noted with an * below. All other set availability depends on your head coach. If you do not employ a head coach, you will only have the three * sets. The ten offensive sets are:

Spread*
Pick & Roll*
Run & Gun*
High Post
Low Post
High Screen
Low Screen
Isolation
Penetrate
Give & Go
Talent Level*

Defensive Sets: There are ten defensive sets in the game. Each (like offensive sets) is good for some things and bad for others. All defensive sets counteract certain offensive sets. As with offensive sets, there are three defensive sets that everyone gets (noted with an * below), the remainder are dependent on the coach (if any) that you employ. The ten defensive sets are:

2-3 Zone*
Man to Man*
Full Court Press*
2-1-2 Zone
1-2-2 Zone
3-2 Zone
1-3-1 Zone
Box & 1
Triangle & 2
Half Court Press

Defensive Settings: Like the offensive play selection, you choose three defenses that you wish to play and a rough percentage of the time that you wish to play those defensive sets. During the course of the game, your coach and team will change the set that they are playing in a rough approximation of the percentages that you have defined.

Double Team: On your bench screen there is an option to select a primary double team and a secondary double team. This drop down list allows an owner to pick a non-injured player from the next opponents team to double team during the game (primary double team). It also allows you to pick a secondary double team in the event the primary player is not on the court. When the player that an owner has selected as the primary double team player is in the game, he will be the only player that is double teamed. If that player leaves the game (for any reason) the double team will fall to the secondary double team player.

A player may be double teamed in any defensive setup. When a player is double teamed, two players from the defensive team will rotate onto him when he has the ball. Who those two players are varies. It could be any of the players out on the court. The net effect of double teaming a player is that he will take less shots (since other players will be open to score) and his shooting percentage will typically be effected as it is more difficult to get off shots and score when covered by multiple people.

When one player is double teamed, however, that opens up other players for better shots. The shooting percentages of other players on the team will tend to increase when you are double teaming someone else.

At the conclusion of a game, the primary and secondary double team fields are cleared. Owners will have to set this feature each new game, including playoff series where you play the same team multiple times in a row.

* Note: if you do not have a scheduled game, the double team options will not display in the bench section. Only if you have an upcoming opponent will these display.

Goto Guy: Each team has the ability to define two 'goto guys', a primary and a secondary. These are players on your team who, when in the game, will take more opportunities to shoot. By defining a primary or secondary goto guy that player will increase his shooting. Being a goto guy does not increase a player's shooting percentage. It only increases the number of shots they will take. Unlike the double team, if both the primary and secondary goto guys are on the court at the same time they will both shoot more than they otherwise would.

The primary goto guy is exactly that. The primary goto guy. He will increase his shooting more (in percentage terms) than the secondary goto guy. It is important to note that defining someone as the primary or secondary goto guy does not insure that they will take the most shots of anyone on the court. In fact depending on how an owner users the goto guy option they often will not be the person with the most shots. Remember that defense, defensive sets, offensive sets and styles all still impact who shoots and shooting percentages. What the goto guy will help teams to do is run modified versions of some of the game sets to steer the ball to other players as well as those it is designed for.

Teams may also elect to leave the Primary goto guy blank and only select a secondary goto guy. This will increase the number of shots that a player takes, but will not increase them as much as if defining a primary goto guy.

The goto guy (since it is your team) will not clear after each game.

Please keep in mind when you are getting certain players additional shots that probably means that other players are not getting as many shots, too.

* Note: if you do not have a scheduled game, the double team options will not display in the bench section. Only if you have an upcoming opponent will these display.
