Fame: Fame (also known as raw fame) is probably the most important off-court category. Fame influences nearly all revenue calculations. The more fame points a team has, the more revenue they will enjoy from such things as concessions, merchandise and ticket sales. The main user controlled method to increase your raw fame score is by purchasing advertising. The more advertising you purchase, the more fame points you will obtain. For new users playing the game it is just as important to spend money on advertising as it is to spend it on any other facet of the front office, perhaps even more important.
Improving Fame : There is one main method to improve fame. That is advertising. Advertising adds points to your raw fame score. It is very important to realize that all teams are usually buying advertising, so, it is tough to leapfrog over teams and often could take multiple seasons. Remember that it isn't the fame rank that is important, it is the raw fame score. With every piece of advertising, that increases. You can also add to your raw fame score by winning your conference and going to the league championship. Both the league champion and the runner up get fame points. The champion of course gets more, but, both get some.
Decreasing in Fame: You don't decrease in fame during the season. If the team behind you devotes more money and effort to advertising, it is possible that you may be passed in raw fame, but this isn't because your fame went down it is because you didn't spend as much on new advertising. Likewise, at the end of the season the league champion and runner up do see a partial bump in raw fame as a result of their on-court performance. So, you may see some shuffling in the off-season. All teams do experience a slight off-season decrease in raw fame that results from the sport being out of the public consciousness. All teams decrease the exact same percentage, so, no changes in rank should happen. The only thing that happens as a result of this is that the gaps between teams often shrink. For example, if teams lose 5% of their raw fame as a result of the off-season, team A (with a raw score of 1,200) would lose 60 points taking them to 1,140. Team B (with a raw score of 1,600) would lose 80 points, taking them to 1,520 points. Both still retain their ranks of 2 and 1 respectively, but, the gap between teams goes from 400 points to 380.
Effects of Fame: Just about everything in the game in some way ties into your team's fame score. The ticket prices you can charge, how many people come to your games, how many concessions you sell, the amount of merchandise revenue you make and more. There is no question that one of the most important things to improve is your raw fame score. It is not as important to improve your fame rank. There is no substitute for a better raw fame score, though.
