Fame Rank: As stated above, fame rank is the gauge of how famous a team is with respect to other teams in the league. Fame rank is nothing more than a measure of teams in relation to each other. It tells you where your team stands in overall raw fame. For example, Team A has a raw fame score of 1,200. Team B has a raw fame score of 1,500. Team A might have a fame rank of 2, whereas team B has a fame rank of 1. All the rank is saying is that team B has more fame than team A. Although fame rank doesn't give you a measure of how far you are behind other teams (or how far teams are behind you) it does give you an idea of where you stand. Often times gaps between teams are large, and you have to remember that the other teams are most likely also increasing fame.

Improving Rank: There is one main method to improve fame rank. That is advertising. Advertising adds points to your raw fame score. When your raw fame score exceeds the team in front of you, your rank will go up. It is very important to realize that all teams are usually buying advertising, so, it is tough to leapfrog over teams and often could take multiple seasons. Remember that it isn't the fame rank that is important, it is the raw fame score. With every piece of advertising, that increases. You are therefore increasing revenue as you engage in fame rank races. Fame rank often becomes a bit of a game within the game, trying to surpass other teams.

Decreasing in Rank: If the team behind you devotes more money and effort to advertising, it is possible that you may be passed. As mentioned before, this doesn't mean that you are decreasing in raw fame, but, that the other team is increasing at a higher rate than you. One other point to note is that the eventual league champion and runner up do see a partial bump in raw fame as a result of their on-court performance. So, you may see some shuffling in the off-season. It is also important to mention that all teams experience a slight off-season decrease in raw fame that results from the sport being out of the public consciousness. All teams decrease the exact same percentage, so, no changes in rank should happen. The only thing that happens as a result of this is that the gaps between teams often shrink. For example, if teams lose 5% of their raw fame as a result of the off-season, team A (with a raw score of 1,200) would lose 60 points taking them to 1,140. Team B (with a raw score of 1,600) would lose 80 points, taking them to 1,520 points. Both still retain their ranks of 2 and 1 respectively, but, the gap between teams goes from 400 points to 380.

Effects of Rank: Aside from a slight influence on the ticket prices which may be charged (both by a team when they are at home and by their opponents when the team is on the road) fame rank has no influence on revenue. Only raw fame has an impact.
