Division Champions: The best team in each division automatically makes the playoffs. These teams are the division champions. Since there are two divisions in each conference, there are 2 teams (out of 8 per conference) that are division champions and therefore make the playoffs. The remaining playoff teams are additional playoff teams.

Other Playoff Teams: In addition to the two division champions that make the playoffs six other teams also make it. These six teams as the next best 6 teams in the league, or, if you check the standings, the other 6 teams (besides division champions) that are seeded.

Determining Home Court: Home court always belongs to the team with the higher seed. If two teams have the same seed (in the league championship round) home court would go to the team with the best record (using tie breakers).

Tie Breakers: Often times the record of two teams is not enough to determine the higher seed, division champion, or even a playoff spot all together. In all cases, ties are broken with this formula: First, the wins and losses of a team are compared, if those are the same, then the game defaults to the difference between points scored and points allowed. Unfortunately, tie breakers including like opponents, strength of schedule and other somewhat subjective and difficult to calculate criteria are not able to be used.

Playoff Rounds: The playoffs start in week 61. There are 60 regular season games before the playoffs start. There are 4 rounds to the playoffs. The number of games in each playoff round is league specific. By default most leagues have best of 5 game series in the playoffs. Some leagues, however, have 7 game series.
